Dan McCollum, 11/4: ... the Board should base its decision on what is best for the reputation of the University, not on individual feelings on either side.

"Use of American Indian mascots ... is a concern to the NCAA"

Last month's study of American Indian mascots is making its way through the NCAA. In a Nov. 11 report, the NCAA Executive Committee's subcommittee on gender and diversity called for additional review on the subject. The NCAA Indian mascot study is to be distributed to the presidential bodies, Management Councils and all championships groups.

The NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC) stated that while "the intent in using American Indian mascots ... is to honor these [Native American] people ... the MOIC believes when American Indians are used as a mascot, harmful stereotypes may result."
(emphasis added)

"The Executive Committee subcommittee agreed that the use of American Indian mascots in intercollegiate athletics is a concern to the NCAA."
