Welcome to RetireTheChief |
The following is the transcript of a Foellinger balcony narrative from April 14, 2000. It is an unedited excerpt from the original Chief dialogue document. MR. DAVID ANDERSON: My name is David Anderson. And I am a student at Northwestern University at Evanston, Illinois and like my friend Matt just attested to, I am a member of a strong group of growing students who are against the Illini mascot.Fifty years from now you as a board are going to have look back on your decision that you will make in the coming months. And you are going to have to ask yourself whether the decision you made was made, was it in regards to money or humanity. The fight for humanity is an uphill battle and not as easy as a fight for money. Money is tied up in the alumni contributions, clothing contracts, this University will survive whether that money is coming from alumni who have pulled out because of the change of mascot. You are going to need to be able to look your children in the eyes in the future and tell them that you upheld humanity not a symbol of the alumni dollar. The future of Native American children is basically in your hands, while that may sound very drastic, each one of you has a decision to make. Will you be making this decision on the basis of the dollar or on humanity. And I beg of you to please consider that humanity is worth more for its future generations. Thank you.
