RetireTheChief

The following is the transcript of a Foellinger balcony narrative from April 14, 2000. It is an unedited excerpt from the original Chief dialogue document.

MR. ARVIN GEE: My name is Arvin Gee, I am a fifth year graduate student here doing an M.D./Ph.D. I didn't even know that there was this opportunity so I thank you for that so I don't really have a prepared statement other than to think that I think the Chief definitely needs to go.

When I first came here to school, I didn't know that Chief Illiniwek existed, nor did I really know what the Illini were when I first came to school here five years ago. I went to the first basketball game and I was completely mortified when I saw the student who was playing the Chief came out prancing around and people were sort of like in a false or what I perceived to be false solemn occasion. It was -- I am at a loss of words for that. It surprises me that such a large University with such a good reputation persists in promoting this racist mascot and promoting racism. That's all I have to say. Thank you for your time.

See the U.I. Dialogue on Chief Illiniwek page for more transcripts and information.
