Welcome to RetireTheChief |
The following is the transcript of a Foellinger balcony narrative from April 14, 2000. It is an unedited excerpt from the original Chief dialogue document. NANCY HENNE: My name is Nancy Henne, I am from Bennett, Iowa, I am a Matisse, which is French and Indian. And I have been coming over here probably testing for the last few years and very upset over this mascot issue because it makes my children and my grandchildren upset because they think people are making fun of us. I don't agree with the idea of the mascot because he is wearing Sioux regalia, which is a sacred thing to us. It's not to be made fun of, it's part of our religion. The man dances with no moccasins, you won't find any Indian dancing in the arena with no moccasins, that is a mockery of our way of praying to the Creator. Before he had danced with eagle feathers, eagle feathers are for Native Americans, they are not for just anybody. I hear that this University here has ten headdresses that have eagle feathers in them that I have been told are here and should be returned back to the Native American people because each one of those feathers is supposed to be earned, not given. I guess that's all I really want to say.
