RetireTheChief

The following is the transcript of a Foellinger balcony narrative from April 14, 2000. It is an unedited excerpt from the original Chief dialogue document.

MS. TAMARA DANIEL: My name is Tamara Daniel. I am a senior at the University of Illinois in the College of Commerce and Business Administration. And I am graduating this May with the highest honor the University can give, a Bronze Tablet Award.

And I understand that all of you on the Board are very intelligent and astute individuals. But I ask you where are your morals? I don't understand how you can look in the mirror and support something that causes shame and pain for so many people. I have heard all the arguments both ways and I understand that there is a lot of nostalgia and that there are a lot of alumni and people who support the University financially who are reluctant to give away the Chief and to let him die. But I hope that you will be able to find in your hearts to do that.

I hope that you will not resort to cowardice and that you will be able to look at your children and know that you made the right decision. I understand it's a very difficult decision that you have to make and that there are going to be a lot of people angry with you either way, whether you choose to keep and support the Chief or whether you choose to end the Chief's existence.

But I just hope you know that some day you are going to have to meet your maker in whatever form that you think that will be. And I hope that you will be able to look him in the eyes. Thanks.
