RetireTheChief
Following are excerpts [with permission] of a letter written to RetireTheChief. -Ed.

A.M., Monday, Feb. 9, 2004

I am a U of I graduate (1977) and believe it is time to retire the Chief.

... In my mind, both sides have done a lot of talking in ways that the other side cannot relate to or understand. The anti-chief side emphasizes the racist stereotype idea, but the pro-chief side emphasizes that hey, they don't mean any disrespect, and the portrayal is meant to be honorable, so what's the big deal? They find one or two Native Americans who don't have a problem with it and think that settles it.

When I was a student, I had the familiar experience the [Chief] supporters describe. I loved the moment when the chief broke through the band and did his thing. But I don't feel that way anymore. I think the time is long past where such things are appropriate or acceptable. So my own position is that yes, the chief needs to be retired, but with dignity and honor. I was very hopeful after Roger Plummer's report a few years ago that the idea of retiring the chief with honor would be taken up with enthusiasm, but have been disappointed to see that if anything, the issue has only become more polarized since then. (It's embarrassing to live in C-U these days -- the chief issue is one big reason. Don't people know this reflects on us as a community?)

At the recent board of trustees meeting at which the vote did not take place, there was plenteous media coverage that included the orange-and-blue-wearing supporters shouting, singing, and generally making a lot of loud noise. The anti-chief contingent sat quietly. The News-Gaz photo the next day (I think I'm remembering this correctly) showed supporters on their feet, mouths open, and opponents sitting quietly...

I haven't been particularly active in this debate except to make my position clear to friends and to write a letter stating my position when opinions were being collected a few years ago. I have also let the Alumni Association know that I will not be a member or contribute any money to the U of I in any way until the chief is retired. And I don't go to sporting events at which the chief will appear.
