Welcome to RetireTheChief |
"Bob Jayne," 2/24/2006 (Chief opinion: VeryFor) Enter your message here. Since being born in Bellflower, IL in 1939, I have grown to be very fond of the U of I and also something we used to see once in awhile. It was called tradition. Last Sun my wife Sharon and I saw our first Big Ten basketball game at Champaign. Knowing that Illinois would (should) win, I was only looking forward to seeing something I had always loved from afar. The performance of Chief Illiniwek. I won't pretend to know all the facts and non facts about him or his history but I will offer the following for your consideration. When he was finished, I not only had chills but I will gladly admit I had tears flowing down my face. I am apparently not smart enough to understand, how something as beautiful and with such class and dignity can be taken away. I saw it as a lovely way to honor the people who sadly lived here before we came to their land. I will always be very glad I got to see this ceromony, before it is destroyed. Thank you.
