"CTS, MD, PHD," 2/16/2007

(Chief opinion: VeryFor)

I am 58 years old and was born in Urbana. I am 1/32 Seneca, a physician who served in the Indian Health Service and a person who, from the first time I saw him gave me interest and pride in my native American Heritage. I also gradualted from Miami University in Ohio, another university where politcal correctness has run amook.

I believe that cartoons or representations of persons meant to invoke intolerance or humor is derogatory. I also believe that representations of native americans as wonderful dancers, drummers, singers, or healers is inspiring.

I am also part Celt. Are the PBS representions of "Celtic Women" insensitive or degrading?

What are we going to call Illiniois next? If we eliminate our native american history, we'll need to change a great number of city and state names. The native american was certainly not dealt with fairly, neither were black americans, the Irish, Germans, Swedes, Hispanics, or Jews.

It seems to me, that repecting our different cultures doesn't mean hiding them.
