Welcome to RetireTheChief |
"JT Spurr," 3/31/2005 (Chief opinion: For) I don't see how this is racist: -A "chief" is the person in charge and a leader... who wouldn't want to be associated with this? -The Illini occupied the Illinois area and are a part of Illinois history. -Sports teams need mascots/icons -There are sports teams that have mascots and icons from Irish (Celtics, Fighting Irish), French-American (Ragin Cajuns), Greek (Spartans), military (Sentinels), governmental (Senators)... it's not racist to use them, it's racist to use them in a negative light. The only part I could somewhat agree with is to take "Fighting" out of the "Fighting Illini." It's racist to think that we should listen to Native American opions outside of the Illini tribe. Clearly, they are not the same people. I would like to see Illini tribe members polled.
