"MGL, new york, new york," 3/31/2005

(Chief opinion: For)

To Whom It May Concern, If Native American mascots are racist, why are mascots drawn from other cultures NOT racist? I've never heard a word of protest about the Boston Celtics or the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (How's that one for stereotyping?!!) Scandanavians are not up in arms over the Minnesoa Vikings. Greeks seem untroubled by the USC Trojans, and neither Hispanic-Americans nor the Roman Catholic Church seem bothered by the San Diego Padres. For that matter, why isn't this entire nation outraged by The New England Patriots? The answer is simple: None of it matters worth a damn, and people need to lighten up. One last note: I do give some credence to the complaints about those logos that are blatantly insulting caricatures (Chief Wahoo of the Cleveland Indians comes to mind) but, on the other hand, nothing could be more demeaning than ND's leprechaun, and as I said earlier, that ain't causing an uproar.
